The phone rang constantly and the inbox of Nikola’s cell phone became flooded, but all of this was ignored. To Nikola, Lihua was just another demon sent to make her life a “living hell” as she put it, and she wanted nothing more to do with the Asian beauty. Lihua pleaded through countless voice mails and texts, wishing only to hold a meaningful conversation. The more messages she left, the more desperate she began to sound and even I felt pity in her favor.
“Just talk with her, at least once?” I asked as the melody of the mobile phone’s ring tone filled the air. Nikola disregarded my suggestion and only looked at me with a puzzled face.
“Are you alright, Thalia? You look pale…” Perhaps it truly meant nothing to Nikola, seeing as once she asked, her back was turned to me.
“Forget about me, “ I snapped with irritation. “You can’t ignore Lihua forever.”
“She’ll give up eventually.”
“I’m afraid I don’t feel the same.”
“…” Nikola, suddenly filled with a burning fire of rage, snatched her phone and answered it mid-ring. “What do you want?” I watched her closely as her mouth stretched into a smile, however this smile was far from one of happiness. “You’ve got to be kidding me… you really won’t stop until you have everything you want?”
“What happened?” I asked, the pain flowing through her and into me weakening my voice to nothing but a whisper.
“And what if I trust you…” Nikola glanced at me, and then looked away, pressing the phone into her ear. My heart fluttered restlessly in sync with her mounting excitement and anxiety, giving me an unspoken answer.
“Well… how about we meet up somewhere?” Nikola offered while nudging a stack of notebooks across the floor with her foot idly. “I think it’s better if we do this face to face… that is, if you really mean what you’re telling me.” She grinned silently as I observed her every move attentively.
“Alright,” she sighed, reaching for the house keys that rested comfortably upon her pillow. “I’ll be there soon.”
“Wait, Nikola…” I murmured softly as I became quite tentative with the idea of my human setting herself up to the mercy of Lihua and regretted the encouragement I gave for her to pursue this girl.
“Don’t, okay?” She sighed, pocketing her keys and running a hand through her hair while she headed for the door.
“But Nikola, I don’t—”
“Just shut up, Thalia! This isn’t any of your business! It’s my decision what I do from here and I don’t need your input.” Nikola frowned at me, pausing with thought. “I don’t need you.”
I was immediately hit with a crashing wave of nausea and dizziness and it felt as though my body had been ignited with fire. When Nikola stepped out of the doorway I doubled over, wrapping an arm across my body automatically as one would when pain burns from within.
“N-Nikola…” My voice had become harsh and uneven as I crawled across the messy bedroom floor. In my chest my heart raced painfully and veils of black flashed over my eyes time and again causing me to flinch, twitch and convulse. I had to stop periodically to prevent myself from passing out, clenching my jaw tightly and growling against the increasing amount of pain. One indescribable stab of pain shot through my entire being and I gripped my hair, screaming in anguish.
Finally I reached the door on the verge of unconsciousness and when I placed my hand upon the frame I witnessed what seemed like black ink slowly filling my veins, crawling up my arm tediously and through my neck. It was as though my blood was turning black with each beat of my heart and I…
A-and... I…
